A House in Hackney

A young professional couple bought this brick-built Victorian terrace house in North London to start a family. The original room layout was still intact and very little had been done to it over the years and the external building fabric was in much need of repair.

The couple’s brief for their new house included extending into the garden to create a family living-dining space, adding a room to the roof space, improving the thermal performance of the external walls and roof, installing new windows and doors, refurbishing the family bathroom and generally refreshing the interiors.

The new extension fills the width of the plot and extends outwards to the permitted development. A small courtyard is left to provide light and air to the deep plan. Generous timber sliding doors open onto a south-facing terrace. A new timber kitchen and joinery benching complements the exposed douglas fir timber structure and joinery benching.
